The biggest city in Iwate prefecture, just 2 hours and half from Tokyo by bullet train is Morioka.
The city has very good local transportation system where you can easy move around until late night. Mountains, rivers and local food, three strong point the attract tourism every year! We suggest you to try the local craft beer and Wanko soba a really food experience!
Near by Morioka you can find some major cities like Tono, Miyako and Kuji.
Tono is a rural town in the hills of central Iwate Prefecture, the area is well know for beautiful landscapes and traditional farms. In Tono you can rental bicycle and ride around rural area where you can visit the river where born the legendary story of the “Kappa” and Denshoen Park a folk village with traditional farmhouses and warehouses.
Miyako city and Kuji city are part of the Michinoku Coastal Trail, Japan’s newest 1000 km hiking trail in the northeastern Tohoku region. Those cities were hit by te giant tsunami of the 2011 and government decided to make the costal area a national park, to help local people to re-build a new Economy life, in fact the Michinoku Coastal Trail is really nice hiking trail, kind of a mix between forests and sea side, for outdoor lovers it is a perfect place to explore.
