Kurashiki is one of Japan’s great old merchant towns. Situated along a scenic canal at the foot of

Day 4: Kobe including stopover at Himeji Castle
Stopover at Himeji Castle: regarded as the finest surviving example of prototypical Japanese castle architecture. It is also known as White Heron Castle (Shirasagijo)
due to its elegant, white appearance.
Kobe was one of the first ports to be opened when Japan began trade with the
outside world in the Meiji period (1868 – 1912) after a long period of seclusion.
While Chinese merchants set up the Nankinmachi (China Town) near the port,
European merchants and diplomats settled down at the foot of the Rokko mountain
range. This is now an historical district called Kitanocho with many Western styled
houses built in the late 19 th and early 20 th century, known as Ijinkan.
Kobe offers a unique Japanese experience with its relaxing and healing onsen, hot-
springs and sake breweries.
